AAU Taekwondo opens 2026 National Championships to international athletes in one-year exception

This year’s edition brings additional significance because the Amateur Athletic Union has exceptionally opened participation to international athletes, creating a unique opportunity for competitors from Latin America and other parts of the world to compete in one of the premier AAU Taekwondo events of the year.

One of the event’s biggest strengths will be its wide range of competitive divisions, offering space for different ages, skill levels, and expressions of Taekwondo. The program features Olympic Sparring, Grassroots Olympic Sparring, Sports Poomsae, Freestyle Poomsae, Traditional Forms, Weapons Forms, Board Breaking, Demo Team Competition, Point Sparring, Continuous Point Sparring, Padded Weapons Sparring, and multiple Para divisions, reflecting the inclusive and multidimensional character of the championship.

In sparring, AAU Taekwondo Nationals 2026 will feature Olympic Sparring for both black belts and color belts, along with age-based divisions and additional developmental opportunities through Grassroots Olympic Sparring. The event will also include Traditional Point Sparring, Continuous Point Sparring, and Para Point Sparring, creating a structure that supports both high-level competition and broader participation.

On the technical side, the championship will showcase a strong Sports Poomsae program, with individual, pair, and team competition, as well as Freestyle Poomsae, which adds creativity, expression, and entertainment value to the event. The schedule also includes Traditional Forms divisions such as WT Forms, ITF Forms, TSD Forms, Open Forms, Team Forms, and Creative Forms, reinforcing the event’s full reach across multiple disciplines.

The competitive lineup is further enhanced by Board Breaking, Weapons Forms, Padded Weapons Sparring, and the always exciting Demo Team Competition, all of which add energy and visual appeal to an already robust program. In addition, the inclusion of Para Taekwondo divisions across several divisions underscores AAU Taekwondo’s commitment to accessibility and opportunity for a wide range of athletes.
