The Turkish Olympic medalist enters a stage of maturity and emotional reconstruction ahead of the 2025 World Championships in Wuxi. In a sport that never forgives pause, İlgün chose to reinvent herself.

Hatice Kübra İlgün, bronze medalist at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and one of World Taekwondo’s most consistent athletes, had returned to training with a renewed mindset —less pressure, more inner control.
With just months left before Wuxi 2025, she trains between the demands of high performance and the calm of someone who understands that strength is not only measured in medals.

“I learned to listen to myself”

Over the past season, İlgün went through injuries and a period of mental fatigue. “I learned to listen to myself. I used to train to prove something. Now I train to feel alive in what I do,” she said calmly.
Unlike her early years —when every fight felt like a test of validation— she now seeks something else: to stay in the game without losing herself.

Her change in focus came at a time when Turkish Taekwondo was undergoing renewal, with fierce internal competition and one of the deepest talent pools in the world. “Turkey always produces champions, but it also forces us to grow up fast. There’s no room for doubt. That’s why I had to stop, reflect, and return,” she explained.

Toward Wuxi with a new philosophy

As part of her build-up to the 2025 World Championships in Wuxi, İlgün had integrated mental training and visualization routines, working closely with sports psychologists and a reshaped coaching team.
Her goal was not just to reach the podium again, but to feel ownership of the mat, approaching competition with greater calm and strategy.

I don’t want to repeat my best fights. I want to surpass them from a different place,” she said.
This mindset led her to refine tactical aspects —her timing, spatial control, and counterattack precision— trademarks of her signature style.

A story beyond results

Beyond medals, İlgün embodies a generation of athletes who learned to survive the pressure of success. In an increasingly demanding circuit, where expectations rise as fast as emotional fatigue, her story stands for balance and resilience.

Medals last a moment. What’s hard is staying strong when nobody’s watching anymore,” she reflected.
With that perspective, Hatice Kübra İlgün approaches Wuxi not just as another championship, but as a chance to prove once again that Taekwondo is also fought from within.
