World Taekwondo and ISF Explore Opportunities to Expand School Taekwondo
The meeting in Seoul focused on increasing student participation and exploring additional competition formats, including Virtual Taekwondo and Para Taekwondo. It took place on the same day ISF signed an educational cooperation agreement with Kukkiwon.
SEOUL, South Korea — World Taekwondo (WT) and the International School Sport Federation (ISF) met on October 16 to discuss strengthening cooperation and creating more opportunities for young people to participate in Taekwondo through school sport.
WT President Dr. Chungwon Choue and Secretary General Jeongkang Seo welcomed ISF President Željko Tanasković and Secretary General Hasnae El Ayoubi for discussions on broadening the sport’s reach among students worldwide.
According to World Taekwondo, the meeting addressed Taekwondo’s role in international school sport and how closer collaboration could provide further opportunities through competition and international exchange.
Virtual Taekwondo and Para Taekwondo Among the Possibilities
Taekwondo is already part of ISF’s sporting programme. Building on that foundation, the representatives explored opportunities to introduce additional competition formats, including Virtual Taekwondo and Para Taekwondo.
These possibilities remain under discussion. The announcement did not confirm their inclusion in ISF events or provide an implementation timetable.
WT and ISF will continue exploring areas of cooperation that support youth development and expand access to Taekwondo through schools around the world.
Building Connections Across School Sport and Education
The meeting took place on the same day ISF formalised a separate partnership with Kukkiwon.
As previously reported by MASTKD, Kukkiwon and ISF signed a Memorandum of Understanding to expand Taekwondo education worldwide. That agreement covers educational programmes, training opportunities for physical education teachers and instructors, cultural exchanges, and closer connections between ISF international events and the World Taekwondo Hanmadang.
The two developments have distinct scopes. Kukkiwon and ISF established a formal framework for educational cooperation, while WT and ISF discussed opportunities to broaden sporting participation and explore additional competition formats.
Together, the meetings highlight a shared interest in strengthening Taekwondo’s presence in international school sport through education, competition and exchange.
