A World Taekwondo Olympic Solidarity Training Camp opened on July 18 in Bissau, bringing together 35 participants, including four coaches, for a week-long programme focused on strengthening Taekwondo development in Guinea-Bissau.

The initiative is jointly organised by World Taekwondo (WT) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) through its Olympic Solidarity programme, in close cooperation with the Guinea-Bissau Olympic Committee, the country’s Ministry of Youth, Culture and Sports, and the Guinea-Bissau Taekwondo Federation (FTGB), with support from the African Taekwondo Union (AFTU).

Representatives from the Government of Guinea-Bissau, the national Olympic Committee, AFTU, World Taekwondo and the local sports community attended the opening ceremony, underlining the importance of cooperation between public institutions and the sports movement in promoting Taekwondo and Olympic values.

Running from July 18 to 24, the programme features a five-day technical training camp followed by two days of local competition. Participants are receiving instruction in Kyorugi and Poomsae, physical conditioning, tactical preparation and coach education under the guidance of experienced international coaches.

The camp seeks not only to raise technical standards but also to provide local athletes and coaches with opportunities to exchange knowledge and gain practical experience in a high-performance training environment.

Beyond its immediate sporting impact, the initiative is designed to strengthen Guinea-Bissau’s national Taekwondo structure by supporting coaches, creating more organised development pathways for athletes and deepening cooperation between national and international stakeholders.

The programme forms part of World Taekwondo’s ongoing collaboration with Olympic Solidarity to expand access to quality training and education in emerging Taekwondo nations. Through coordinated work with local authorities and sporting organisations, the project aims to establish stronger foundations for the country’s future participation on the international stage.

World Taekwondo expressed its appreciation to the IOC Olympic Solidarity programme, the Guinea-Bissau Olympic Committee, the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Sports, AFTU, FTGB and all partners whose support made the programme possible.
