Georgia Bids to Host Two Major European Taekwondo Events in 2027

Georgian sports authorities and European Taekwondo representatives met in Tbilisi to discuss the country’s bid for the 2027 European Junior Championships and the European Olympic Weight Categories Championships. The final decision remains subject to approval by the continental governing body.

Georgia has formally advanced its interest in hosting two major European Taekwondo competitions in 2027, with both events proposed for the capital city of Tbilisi.

The initiative was discussed during a working meeting at the Ministry of Sport of Georgia. First Deputy Minister Irakli Medzmariashvili and Deputy Minister Irakli Dolaberidze received European Taekwondo Sports Director Ioannis Mouroutsos to assess the country’s plans and organizational prospects.

The proposed program includes the 2027 European Junior Taekwondo Championships and the European Olympic Weight Categories Championships for senior athletes, an event connected to the Olympic ranking pathway ahead of Los Angeles 2028.

According to the information released following the meeting, the two competitions could bring approximately 1,000 athletes to Tbilisi, strengthening Georgia’s position as an emerging host of international sporting events.

Alexander Todua, President of the Georgian National Taekwondo Federation, and federation Vice President Levan Piolia also participated in the discussions, highlighting the cooperation between government authorities, the national federation and European Taekwondo.

However, the hosting rights have not yet been awarded. The final decision will be taken by the European Taekwondo Executive Board at an upcoming meeting.

If approved, the double event would place Georgia at the center of European Taekwondo in a strategically important season on the road to the LA28 Olympic Games.
