The Kukkiwon has officially set the stage for the 2026 World Taekwondo Hanmadang, reinforcing its role as the global guardian of Taekwondo’s cultural and technical identity beyond Olympic competition.

Scheduled to bring together practitioners from around the world, the World Taekwondo Hanmadang continues to stand as one of the most inclusive and representative events in the global Taekwondo ecosystem, emphasizing participation, heritage, and technical expression over ranking-based competition.

According to Han Hye-jin, who was appointed as acting chair of the event, and is also CEO of Mookas, said, Hanmadang is expected to further expand its international reach, reflecting Kukkiwon’s ongoing efforts to strengthen global engagement and participation.

Unlike elite tournaments governed by World Taekwondo, the Hanmadang operates under a fundamentally different philosophy. It is not designed to crown champions within the Olympic pathway, but rather to showcase the full breadth of Taekwondo as a martial art—through Poomsae, breaking techniques, demonstrations, and creative performance disciplines.

This distinction reflects a dual structure within global Taekwondo: while World Taekwondo drives the sport’s Olympic and competitive framework, Kukkiwon consolidates its authority as the technical and cultural backbone of the discipline worldwide.

From an institutional perspective, the Hanmadang has evolved into a strategic platform of international outreach. By welcoming participants across age groups, skill levels, and national boundaries, Kukkiwon promotes a model of accessibility that contrasts with the increasingly selective nature of high-performance competition.

At the same time, the event works as a powerful instrument of cultural diplomacy. Through the global diffusion of standardized techniques, certification systems, and traditional values, Kukkiwon continues to expand Korea’s influence in shaping the identity and direction of Taekwondo worldwide.

The 2026 edition is expected to further strengthen that positioning, as Kukkiwon deepens its engagement with the international community amid a broader evolution of the sport. In parallel with the growth of Olympic Taekwondo and new competitive formats, the Hanmadang reaffirms the importance of preserving the art’s foundational principles.

In that context, the World Taekwondo Hanmadang is not merely an event—it is a statement of identity. One that underscores that Taekwondo, beyond medals and rankings, remains a global cultural system rooted in tradition, discipline, and shared values.
