The MOU signed on April 3 opened a new framework of cooperation between Amateur Athletic Union Taekwondo of the United States and Mexican Federation of School Sport, with a focus on athlete development, technical exchange, and international projection within school sport.
Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Taekwondo and the Mexican Federation of School Sport (FEMEDEES) formalized a strategic alliance that set a new cooperation roadmap between the United States and Mexico to strengthen school sport and expand competitive, educational, and institutional opportunities across the region. The understanding was signed by Clinton Oh, Executive Director of Martial Arts/Taekwondo for AAU, and José Martín Sánchez Tenorio, President of FEMEDEES.
The document established as its central purpose a framework for collaboration to promote the growth of school sport not only in both countries, but also with a broader international vision. Within that approach, both parties recognized school sport as a key platform for the integral formation of student-athletes, combining performance, education, discipline, and personal development.
Binational Platform With Continental Reach

The scope of the agreement did not remain at the level of a symbolic declaration. AAU and FEMEDEES defined concrete areas of cooperation aimed at the development of student-athletes, coaches, and officials, technical exchange, knowledge-sharing, and the strengthening of more structured, inclusive, and sustainable school sport systems. The text also included the sharing of best practices in organizational structure, digital systems, and competition management.
One of the strongest institutional points of the memorandum was its support for major events. The document included backing for competitions such as the FEMEDEES National Gymnasiade, the AAU National Championships, and other AAU-sanctioned events across multiple sports disciplines, while also opening the door to jointly supported binational competitions, showcases, and invitational tournaments.
That same section also established a direct link to higher-profile international stages by mentioning participation pathways leading to events such as the ISF Gymnasiade (World School Sport Games) and continental and international school sport championships.
Athlete Development and Long-Term Structure
The agreement also made it clear that the alliance goes far beyond event organization. Both organizations outlined goals tied to early talent identification, long-term athlete development, and the creation of international competition opportunities for student-athletes. That was reinforced by the intention to facilitate exchange programs for athletes, coaches, referees, and administrators, along with educational and certification programs aligned with international standards.
From a strategic standpoint, the text included the possibility of advancing Mexico–United States competition circuits, organizing binational and regional school sport events, creating delegation exchange pathways, and aligning technical standards and competition frameworks. The political dimension of the agreement also appeared clearly in another point: both sides expressed their intention to support the expansion of school sport across the Americas through joint leadership.
A Move With Structural Value
From an institutional perspective, the understanding between AAU and FEMEDEES sent a clear signal: school sport is increasingly being positioned as a foundational development tool with international impact. The memorandum insisted on concepts such as inclusion, excellence, global connectivity, transparency, and strategic alignment, outlining a vision that goes beyond competition and connects directly with long-term formation.
The MOU established a formal platform for two influential actors in the development sector to coordinate programs, competitions, and growth mechanisms with regional projection. And in a landscape where the growth of Taekwondo and school sport increasingly depends on strong networks, this alliance between AAU and FEMEDEES emerges as a move with real potential to gain influence across the continental map.
