The Pan American Taekwondo Union (PATU) began a new technical era with the appointment of Myung Chan Kim as Technical Director, a position that brought in someone with extensive continental experience and international recognition in taekwondo. His debut in the role took place in Las Vegas, in a particularly important context for the region and for the United States on the road to Los Angeles 2028.

Kim did not come from an unknown place. For years, he was one of the most visible faces of Pan American refereeing, serving as PATU’s Referee Chair in official competitions and activities for many years, consolidating a technical profile based on experience, rules expertise, and in-depth knowledge of continental operations.

He is currently also linked to the United States Olympic Committee as a liaison with Taekwondo, at a very significant time as this NOC will host the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

His career also reached the highest level of sport as a referee at the 2012 London Olympic Games, a credential that reinforced his international standing and gave him the backing to now take on a broader responsibility within the Pan American structure.

Beyond high performance, Kim also became publicly associated with charitable initiatives related to “Healing Guatemala,” a facet that helped build an image of a leader committed not only to competition but also to the social impact of Taekwondo.

The appointment of Myung Chan Kim as PATU Technical Director can be seen as a commitment to continuity, experience, and continental vision. His past as a referee, his Olympic career, and his proximity to the development of Taekwondo in the United States gave PATU a heavyweight figure to lead a key area at a stage that will require order, technical insight, and regional projection.
