Asunción Wins the Bid to Host the 2031 Pan American Games
Asunción, Paraguay, has officially been selected to host the 2031 Pan American Games, securing victory over Rio–Niterói with 28 votes to 24 in an election filled with excitement, unity, and continental pride.
The decisive vote took place during the Extraordinary General Assembly of Panam Sports, convened this Friday in Santiago, Chile.

Asunción, Paraguay, has officially been selected to host the 2031 Pan American Games, securing victory over Rio–Niterói with 28 votes to 24 in an election filled with excitement, unity, and continental pride.
The decisive vote took place during the Extraordinary General Assembly of Panam Sports, convened this Friday in Santiago, Chile.
A Historic Moment for Paraguay
Out of 52 eligible votes, only Dominica was absent, allowing 40 Panam Sports member nations to take part in one of the most closely contested elections in recent memory.
This marks the first time in history that Paraguay will host the Pan American Games, becoming the 13th nation in the Americas to organize the region’s largest multisport event.
An Emotional Victory
“I’m very happy. Our dreams, thanks to God and with everyone’s support, have come true. We will work tirelessly for this and will never let our people down. I dedicate this victory to the Paraguayan people and to all the Americas striving to move forward,” said an emotional Camilo Pérez López Moreira, President of the Paraguayan Olympic Committee and member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Reflecting on the symbolic nature of the contest, Pérez added:
“Sometimes it’s not easy to press the button for David when Goliath is on the other side. That’s why I’m so grateful. We had a strong opponent, and I thank Brazilian Olympic Committee President Marcos La Porta, all my friends, and especially our President Santiago Peña for their unwavering support.”
The Americas Choose Asunción
With this result, Panam Sports reaffirmed its commitment to expanding opportunities across the continent, bringing the Pan American Games to a new corner of South America.
Asunción now begins its journey toward 2031, preparing to welcome thousands of athletes and write a new chapter in the sporting history of the Americas.
