A story of complaints, intervention, and tensions that set the road to September 29
On September 29, 2025, the Oceania Taekwondo Union (OTU) will hold its elections. The process comes after months of controversy that included allegations of manipulation, accusations of conflicts of interest, and even the intervention of World Taekwondo (WT), headquartered in Korea.
A Process Under Questioning
The first elections, held virtually in May, were surrounded by disputes. Possible conflicts of interest were pointed out in the electoral committee, the validity of some votes was questioned, and the final count left doubts among several sectors.
Specialized media outlets, including MASTKD, published testimonies and documents detailing concerns about the transparency of the process and how the voting was conducted.
The Intervention of World Taekwondo
World Taekwondo later decided to nullify the results of that election. The leadership that had been proclaimed was dissolved, and in its place, an interim body —the Sunset Interim Board— was appointed to temporarily take over the governance of the Oceania Continental Union.
The Presidential Candidates
Ahead of the new election on September 29, two main presidential candidates have been confirmed:
- John Kotsifas (Australia), a leader with extensive experience in the continental organization.
- Maher Magableh (Australia), also active in regional leadership with connections to the international structure.
Both will compete in an election where national federations of Oceania are expected to decide the direction of the organization for the coming years.
An Election Under Observation
The outcome of these elections will be closely followed by the international taekwondo community. It represents an opportunity to restore institutional order in the OTU and define its future after months of tension and disputes.
