This move marks a major milestone in PTF’s evolution, establishing the organization not just as a promoter of professional and amateur Taekwondo, but as a values-driven global platform for human rights, education, inclusion, and peace.

The Taekwondo Revolution: The Birth of the Professional Taekwondo Federation (PTF) as the Global Governing Body of the Sport

What Is the UNESCO Sport Charter and Why Does It Matter?

The UNESCO Charter is one of the most respected global frameworks for ethics in sport. It outlines essential principles such as:

  • Universal access to physical activity and sport without discrimination

  • Respect for human dignity and cultural diversity

  • Transparent and ethical governance in sport organizations

  • Use of sport as a tool for education and social transformation

By adopting this charter, PTF has committed to embedding these principles into its licensing systems, education programs, event policies, and governance codes—laying the groundwork for a more ethical, inclusive, and globally relevant future for Taekwondo.

“Our Commitment Isn’t Symbolic — It’s Systemic”

That’s how Rick Shin, President of PTF, put it in his announcement:

“Our commitment to UNESCO’s values is not symbolic — it’s systemic. Taekwondo must stand for something greater than itself.”

PTF already operates standardized licensing systems for athletes, coaches, referees, and dojangs, as well as a rapidly growing global event structure. Now, this alignment with UNESCO adds a powerful layer of legitimacy, clearly separating PTF from outdated or authoritarian models of governance still seen in parts of the sport.

What’s Next? AIMS, ARISF, and Peace & Sport

In addition to aligning with the UN charter, PTF is actively pursuing international recognition within the Olympic ecosystem. According to Rick Shin, PTF has already taken the first steps to apply for:

  • AIMS (Alliance of Independent Recognized Members of Sport) — a key entry point into IOC-affiliated institutions

  • ARISF (Association of IOC Recognized International Sports Federations) — for federations recognized by the IOC but not yet part of the Olympic Games

  • Peace and Sport — a global organization that uses sport as a tool for diplomacy and social development

“Our goal is for PTF to become an official member of AIMS within three years,” Shin stated. “That would be the first step toward future IOC recognition.”

A New Era for Taekwondo — Rooted in Purpose

PTF’s approach to Taekwondo goes far beyond competition. It positions the sport as a universal language of strength, dignity, and opportunity, accessible to people of all styles, nations, and backgrounds.

While other federations face criticism for authoritarianism, favoritism, or lack of transparency, PTF is building a modern, inclusive, and ethically grounded alternative—one that reflects the values of today’s global sporting community.

At MASTKD, we’ll continue to follow PTF’s progress and document each step of this transformation. We believe that a professional Taekwondo movement built on integrity, fairness, and global purpose is not only possible—it’s essential.
