World Taekwondo Suspends Mexico and Costa Rica Federations Over Governance Issues

World Taekwondo (WT) has announced the suspension of the national federations of Mexico and Costa Rica, establishing interim management committees to oversee their operations. This decision was confirmed during the WT Council Meeting held on May 9, 2025, in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates, on the occasion of the World Taekwondo Cadet Championships.

During the meeting, the Council approved the recommendations of the Member Relations and Development (MRD) Commission, which led to the suspension of both federations and the creation of interim management boards to ensure proper governance and operational oversight.

The suspension of the Mexican Taekwondo Federation (FMTKD) was based on statutory and governance concerns related to its August 2024 electoral process. While FMTKD remains a member of WT, the interim board will oversee its operations and support the organization of new elections that meet international standards of transparency and legality.

In the case of the Costa Rican Taekwondo Federation (FCT), the suspension was issued in response to serious safeguarding and athlete protection concerns. The interim board will supervise critical aspects of the federation’s management during this intervention period.

WT has invited national sports authorities, including National Olympic Committees and relevant government agencies, to nominate representatives to join the interim boards, ensuring a fair, impartial, and credible transition.

These actions reflect World Taekwondo’s commitment to integrity, good governance, and athlete protection, ensuring that all national federations operate in compliance with the highest standards of the sport worldwide.
