Idé Issaka Re-elected as President of the African Taekwondo Union

The African Taekwondo Union (AFTU) held its Elective General Assembly on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at the United Nations headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where the re-election of Idé Issaka as president for the 2025–2029 term was confirmed.

The African Taekwondo Union (AFTU) held its Elective General Assembly on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at the United Nations headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where the re-election of Idé Issaka as president for the 2025–2029 term was confirmed.

The election took place during a gathering of national federation representatives from across the African continent. Issaka, a native of Niger, received overwhelming support to continue leading the body that governs Taekwondo in Africa.

Since beginning his first term in 2021, Idé Issaka has promoted various development initiatives, including the expansion of grassroots programs, the training of referees, and the strengthening of continental competitions. His tenure also saw the opening of AFTU’s new headquarters in Niamey, Niger, a project carried out in collaboration with the Nigerien government.

In addition to his role at AFTU, Issaka holds positions at the international level, including membership on the World Taekwondo Council. His global standing has been considered an important factor in boosting Africa’s presence at international Taekwondo events.

Alongside the presidential re-election, the Assembly also confirmed the continuity of Balla Dieye as Secretary General of AFTU, ensuring stability and consistency in the leadership team’s efforts.

Looking ahead to the new term, the Union’s announced priorities will focus on strengthening grassroots development, enhancing coach and referee education, and promoting social inclusion programs through Taekwondo, with particular emphasis on youth empowerment and gender equality.

The re-election of Idé Issaka marks a new chapter for African Taekwondo at a time when the discipline seeks to consolidate its growth across the continent and gain greater prominence on the world stage.
