Virtual Taekwondo Added to Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games Programme
World Taekwondo’s technology-driven discipline will make its official Asian Games debut on October 2, 2026, in Japan, marking a new step in the sport’s expansion into virtual competition, innovation and mixed-gender formats.
Virtual Taekwondo has officially been added to the programme of the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games, marking a significant milestone for World Taekwondo and for the sport’s continued evolution within the global digital sports landscape.
The competition will take place on October 2, 2026, at the Toyohashi City General Gymnasium in Japan. The event will feature a mixed-gender individual competition, with male and female athletes aged between 17 and 35 competing together in a 16-player single-elimination tournament.
The decision was finalized during the Asian Games Organising Committee Board meeting on June 16 and was later approved by the Olympic Council of Asia.

A new competitive format
Virtual Taekwondo combines traditional Taekwondo techniques with virtual reality technology. Athletes compete using VR headsets and motion-tracking systems that translate their movements into a virtual arena.
Each competitor performs inside a 4m x 4m field of play while wearing five motion sensors placed on the upper body, knees and lower legs. These sensors capture the athletes’ movements and convert them into actions within the digital competition environment.
Matches are contested over 60-second rounds. Athletes aim to deplete their opponent’s “health bar” or finish the round with a higher remaining bar. Bouts are decided in a best-of-three format.
One of the most distinctive features of Virtual Taekwondo is its inclusive structure, allowing athletes to compete on equal terms regardless of gender and across a broad age range.
Choue welcomes Asian Games inclusion
World Taekwondo President Dr. Chungwon Choue welcomed the announcement and thanked the Organising Committee and the Olympic Council of Asia for their support.
“We are delighted that Virtual Taekwondo has been included in the official programme of the Asian Games, and I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Organising Committee and the OCA for their support. Virtual Taekwondo represents a new and inclusive form of sport, providing opportunities for athletes of all ages and genders to participate and excel,” Choue said.
From Olympic Esports to the Asian Games
Virtual Taekwondo first gained international visibility at the IOC’s Olympic Esports Series in Singapore in 2023. The discipline continued its expansion in November 2024, when Singapore hosted the inaugural Virtual Taekwondo World Championships, attracting more than 120 athletes from 23 countries.
Its inclusion in the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games reinforces World Taekwondo’s strategy to position the sport within new formats of competition, while connecting with younger audiences and embracing technological innovation.
For Taekwondo, the move represents more than the addition of another event to a continental multi-sport programme. It reflects a broader transition in the way martial arts, Olympic sport, inclusion and digital technology are beginning to converge on the international stage.
