The Oceania Taekwondo Union concluded four days of international competition in Australia with results that extend beyond the region’s borders. As confirmed by its president, Maher Magableh, in an exclusive interview with MASTKD, athletes from 45 countries took part in the WT President’s Cup Oceania and the 2026 Australian Open.

The two competitions took place back-to-back at the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Center in Queensland. The President’s Cup, held on June 18 and 19, awarded G3-category points toward the world rankings, while the Australian Open rounded out the program on June 20 and 21 with G2 classification.

The opportunity to compete in two ranking-point events at the same venue made the Gold Coast a strategic meeting point for athletes from different continents, including Olympic athletes, world champions, Grand Prix winners, and young talents on their way to international recognition.

“We celebrated excellence at the highest level”

Magableh highlighted to MASTKD the sporting and human dimensions achieved over the four days.

“Athletes from 45 countries gathered for an unforgettable celebration of elite sport, bringing together rising stars with Olympic athletes, world champions, and Grand Prix winners in an extraordinary setting,” said the OTU president.

The leader noted that the competition maintained a high-intensity atmosphere, with athletes pushing their limits and delivering world-class performances.

“Each competition showcased exceptional talent, determination, and the passion that drives excellence. We witnessed breathtaking moments, historic achievements, and inspiring displays of sportsmanship and resilience,” he noted.

In addition to Kyorugi, the program included Poomsae, Para Kyorugi, and Para Poomsae competitions, reinforcing the comprehensive and inclusive nature of both events.

Two Events, One International Platform

The consecutive staging of the President’s Cup and the Australian Open allowed athletes to earn international ranking points at a single event.

The President’s Cup’s G3 status gave it particularly significant weight in the world rankings, while the G2 Australian Open expanded the competitive opportunities for the participating delegations.

But the impact was also institutional. The reported participation of 45 countries demonstrates Oceania’s ability to host competitions that transcend its continental scope and attract athletes from some of Taekwondo’s leading nations.

For Magableh, the outcome also signals the future of the sport and the next generation of athletes.

“Together, we witnessed excellence at the highest level, celebrated the champions, and created memories that will inspire the next generation of athletes around the world,” he said.

Oceania Seeks to Expand Its Global Presence

The turnout at the Gold Coast event represents a significant step for a region seeking to increase its prominence within World Taekwondo’s international calendar.

The presence of established champions alongside emerging athletes also allowed the competitions to serve as a platform for development, exposure, and international experience for Oceania’s representatives.

“Congratulations to every competitor who stepped onto the mat and gave it their all. Their commitment, courage, and pursuit of greatness continue to inspire us,” Magableh said in an interview with MASTKD.

The OTU president concluded his assessment with a statement that sums up the vision he aims to advance through the continental organization:

“The future of the sport is bright, and this event demonstrated that anything is possible when passion meets purpose.”

With two consecutive competitions, points toward the world rankings, and representatives from 45 countries, the Gold Coast became one of the main hubs of international Taekwondo over the course of four days and sent a clear signal about Oceania’s global aspirations.
