The Sri Lanka Taekwondo Federation announced the appointment of Master Ki Su Lee as Chairman of the Asian Taekwondo Union (ATU) Kyorugi Referee Committee, a move that strengthens Sri Lanka’s technical influence within the continental structure and recognizes a long-standing commitment to the development of refereeing and competition in Asian Taekwondo.
The Sri Lankan federation presented the appointment as a source of institutional pride and emphasized that it is a distinction built on “dedication, hard work, and contribution to the development of Taekwondo at the international level.”

The position is no small matter. According to the ATU’s current statutes, the Kyorugi division is responsible for reviewing the organization and management of competitions, improving the uniform application of WT rules, and conducting training sessions for international referees at events promoted by the continental union. In other words, it is a role that directly influences the quality, consistency, and visibility of refereeing in Asia.
Ki Su Lee’s appointment comes as no surprise within this ecosystem. In December 2025, the ATU had already recognized him among the instructors who actively participated in its Referee Education Program, one of the first technical pillars promoted by the Kim Sangjin administration. That prior involvement reinforces the notion of technical continuity behind his new responsibility.

His career in Sri Lanka also demonstrates a well-established profile. Ki Su Lee has served for years as Chairman or Head of the Technical Committee of the Sri Lanka Taekwondo Federation, in addition to being a Kukkiwon dispatch master in the country. Added to this is a longstanding history in high-performance sports: as early as 2006, he was Sri Lanka’s National Head Coach and International Referee at international competitions.
Beyond the formal announcement, the relevant detail is political-technical: the appointment of Ki Su Lee places a leader with extensive field experience, training, and refereeing expertise at the helm of a committee critical to Asia’s present. At a time when the ATU seeks to standardize practices, strengthen referee education, and consolidate a more uniform operational approach, this appointment appears as a sign of continuity in that direction.
