In an exclusive interview conducted during MASTKD’s on-site coverage in Fujairah, Jung Heon Kim — Vice President of the Asian Taekwondo Union, President of the Taekwondo Promotion Foundation (TPF), and Poomsae Chairman — outlined a roadmap focused on global cooperation, grassroots development, and practical support for countries and clubs with fewer resources.
Kim said the TPF operated as a support platform for Taekwondo “all over the world,” working in close connection with World Taekwondo and the continental unions.
Global support, with focus on less-resourced members
Kim emphasized that the foundation aimed to provide concrete assistance where development tools were most needed — including countries with limited possibilities, under-resourced clubs, and emerging structures.
“If anybody needs support or any kind of collaboration, we will be happy to work,” he told MASTKD, underlining the TPF’s open approach to initiatives and requests from the international Taekwondo community.
Grassroots development as a key priority
Kim described grassroots development as essential to expanding opportunity and strengthening the sport globally. In that context, he said support could take different forms: backing development programs, offering technical assistance, and, when possible, creating pathways for participation and integration into the wider Taekwondo community.
The goal, he explained, was to help athletes, coaches, and organizations gain exposure and experience through education initiatives, camps, and structured development activities.
ATU operational capacity and a “practical contribution”
Speaking in his ATU role, Kim referred to a phase of organizational and operational strengthening. He highlighted the value of having an office structure that improved coordination within the region and could also contribute, in the future, to broader global cooperation when needed.
“It is a small contribution, but practical, to the world community,” he said.
“I want to work for Taekwondo people and for the next generation”
Closing the interview, Kim linked his institutional work to a long-term vision: serving the Taekwondo community through governance, supporting cooperation projects, and building opportunities for the next generation.
“I want to work for Taekwondo people and I want to work also for our next generation,” he stated.
