World Taekwondo (WT) today approved, through its Executive Council, a proposal for amendments to the Statutes that reorganized part of its commission and committee structure, incorporated a Disciplinary Tribunal as an internal mechanism, and established transition rules for cases initiated before the new scheme came into effect. The text is subject to final approval by the General Assembly.

WT restructured the Global Integrity Unit and shielded it from operational influences

Disciplinary Tribunal: internal mechanism and case-by-case panels

Among the key changes, the document incorporated a Disciplinary Tribunal as an internal mechanism for resolving disciplinary matters under the applicable WT regulatory framework. The wording described its operation as follows:

  • “Case-by-case” panels: these are formed for a specific case and dissolved when the proceedings are concluded.
  • Selection of members by appointment: a mechanism was provided for selecting members on a case-by-case basis, depending on the experience and needs of the case.
  • Impartiality criteria: the text included the requirement to avoid conflicts of interest in the composition of the panel.

The document also indicated that the Tribunal will apply and interpret WT’s internal rules (statutes, codes, regulations, and policies) in accordance with the framework described.

Transition rule: what happened to cases already initiated

The text explicitly ordered the transition to avoid restarts or gaps:

  • Proceedings, investigations, disciplinary processes, or appeals initiated before the new structure will continue under the rules and bodies in force until then, unless WT expressly decided otherwise.
  • Once the new system is active, new disciplinary matters will be processed by the Disciplinary Tribunal in accordance with the defined framework.

Reorganization of committees and commissions

The document also included changes to the structure and nomenclature, with references to institutional bodies and functions, including:

  • adjustments related to membership and internal coordination (according to the reorganization of committees reflected in the text);
  • incorporation or redefinition of permanent bodies listed in the comparative structure.

Pending ratification

Although the Executive Council approved the proposal today, its final adoption is subject to the final acceptance of the General Assembly.
