Team Denmark suspends funding to Danish Taekwondo over trust and governance concerns

Team Denmark has temporarily suspended its cooperation with the Danish Taekwondo Federation (DTaF) and confirmed that it will not provide funding for 2026. According to reports, the decision is linked to concerns about governance, financial management and the overall reliability of the federation’s structures.

According to SPORT.TV2, the suspension is based on “lack of confidence” in how the federation has handled public resources and its responsibilities. The sports director of Team Denmark, Lars Balle Christensen, stated that there is not enough certainty that procedures have been followed as agreed, and therefore a deeper review has been initiated.

What began as a standard Olympic-cycle cooperation has now turned into a full institutional evaluation. According to MSN, Team Denmark had warned the federation in November that state funding for 2026 should not be expected while the investigation is ongoing. This has created uncertainty among athletes and coaches who were planning long-term programmes toward Los Angeles 2028.

It was also reported that DTaF had previously received innovation-federation status and a grant of 720,000 Danish kroner, intended to support emerging athletes such as Tobias Hyttel and Otto Herlev Jørgensen in the Olympic pathway. According to SPORT.TV2, Team Denmark now wants to verify if those funds were used according to the agreement.

Reports also mention delayed salary payments to national staff and difficulties with reimbursements for athletes during training camps. According to Politiken, the federation’s Olympic programme recorded a deficit of around 300,000 kroner, which triggered a spending freeze in that department.

The suspension does not mean a definitive break. According to the sources, Team Denmark expects documentation that coaches and staff are working under socially responsible conditions, and that athletes have proper support structures.

DTaF president Mireille Enggaard Kempf has publicly acknowledged that the federation has been through a turbulent period, and confirmed ongoing efforts to clean up and professionalise the organisation both financially and administratively.

For now, funding and cooperation remain on hold while Team Denmark reviews whether the federation meets the standards required for the use of public resources and the management of elite sports programmes in Denmark.
