Astana Confirmed as Host of the 2027 World Taekwondo Championships
The World Taekwondo Council officially confirmed Astana, Kazakhstan, as the host city of the 2027 World Taekwondo Championships during its meeting in Wuxi, China, held on the eve of the Elective General Assembly.

It will be the first time that Kazakhstan hosts the sport’s premier global event, which will gather the world’s best athletes one year ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
During the same session, Samokov, Bulgaria, was selected to host the 2027 World Taekwondo Under-21 Championships. Following the approval, the hosting agreements were formally signed with both organizing committees.
World Taekwondo President Dr. Chungwon Choue congratulated the host cities and highlighted their importance within the upcoming Olympic cycle. During the meeting, he also received the Athens 2004 Olympic torch, donated by Justin Hou, member of the IOC Culture and Heritage Commission and of the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation Council, which joined WT’s existing torch collection.
The Council additionally approved the appointment of Aïcha Garad Ali as Honorary Vice President and recognized Issaka Ide, President of the African Taekwondo Union, for his service to the sport as he steps down at the end of his term.
Dr. Choue announced that the 2025 World Taekwondo Gala Awards and an Extraordinary Council Meeting will be held on February 1, 2026, in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates.
The session took place alongside the Wuxi 2025 World Taekwondo Championships, which bring together 991 athletes from 179 nations, including neutral and refugee teams competing under the WT flag.
Reports were presented by Secretary General Jeongkang Seo, Corbin Min, Director of Membership & Integrity, and Philippe Bouedo, Chair of the Technical Committee, who submitted proposed rule amendments for review by the General Assembly.
The meeting concluded the current Council’s term ahead of the 2025–2029 elections, scheduled for the following day.
