Bahri Tanrıkulu: From World Champion to Transformational Leader of Turkish Taekwondo

With a management style rooted in action, openness, and long-term vision, the former world champion and Olympic medalist has begun implementing concrete changes that break away from more than two decades of previous leadership.
Six months into his term as President of the Turkish Taekwondo Federation, Bahri Tanrıkulu has already proven that his leadership is not just a symbolic change, but the beginning of a new era for Taekwondo in Turkey. With a management style rooted in action, openness, and long-term vision, the former world champion and Olympic medalist has begun implementing concrete changes that break away from more than two decades of previous leadership.

His election marked the end of a long-standing era under Metin Şahin, who had presided over the federation from 2003 to 2024. The transition wasn’t merely about changing names—it represented a paradigm shift: from a rigid and centralized model to a more dynamic, professional, and community-focused approach.
A Federation in Motion
Elected in October 2024 with an overwhelming majority—181 out of 186 valid votes—Tanrıkulu quickly launched an ambitious agenda. His objectives are clear: to professionalize the federation’s internal structure, modernize its operations, and elevate Turkish Taekwondo to its rightful place on the international stage.
One of the most visible milestones of his early presidency was the inauguration of the “Nur Tatar Spor Salonu”, a modern training complex located in Keçiören. The facility, named after the legendary Olympic athlete Nur Tatar, was secured through direct negotiations with the local municipality and is now being used for elite-level training and technical work. “For years, our community didn’t even have a tree planted. Today, we have a facility that represents the future,” said Tanrıkulu during the venue’s presentation at the National Junior Championships in Samsun.
Structural Renewal from Within
Beyond symbolic gestures, Tanrıkulu has been driving substantial internal reforms. These include administrative audits, a reorganization of key departments, and the establishment of open communication channels with coaches, referees, and clubs across the country.
He has also implemented a regional development strategy, supporting events in various provinces and ensuring the federation maintains an active presence throughout the national circuit. Under his leadership, the institution has regained momentum and reconnected with its grassroots base.

A European Voice
Another significant milestone has been his election as a member of the Executive Committee of the European Taekwondo Union (ETU). This appointment strengthens Turkey’s influence in continental decision-making and opens new international pathways for Turkish athletes, coaches, and events.
A Leader with Athletic Legitimacy
Few sports administrators can match Tanrıkulu’s resume: three-time world champion, two-time European champion, and Olympic silver medalist at Athens 2004. His experience as an elite competitor not only grants him credibility but also shapes his leadership philosophy—one of determination, high standards, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
The Challenge of Sustaining Momentum
While still early in his term, Tanrıkulu’s first six months in office have been marked by decisive action and tangible progress. In a sport that often finds itself stuck in bureaucratic inertia, his leadership is being welcomed as a breath of fresh air. Across Turkey, the Taekwondo community is beginning to trust in a leadership that reflects the same intensity found in competition.
At MASTKD, we will continue to closely follow this process, observing whether this early momentum can evolve into a lasting and meaningful transformation.
