ATU Poomsae Education Seminar in Tokyo: One more step towards the globalization of Poomsae
From September 19-23, the city of Tokyo, Japan, hosted the ATU Poomsae Education Seminar, an event organized by the Asian Taekwondo Union (ATU) that brought together world-renowned experts to promote the growth and globalization of Poomsae, a key discipline within Taekwondo. The seminar focused on ensuring the continuity of Poomsae in the Olympic program and in Olympic cycle events, as well as developing advanced techniques for recognized Poomsae and Freestyle.
From September 19-23, the city of Tokyo, Japan, hosted the ATU Poomsae Education Seminar, an event organized by the Asian Taekwondo Union (ATU) that brought together world-renowned experts to promote the growth and globalization of Poomsae, a key discipline within Taekwondo. The seminar focused on ensuring the continuity of Poomsae in the Olympic program and in Olympic cycle events, as well as developing advanced techniques for recognized Poomsae and Freestyle.
The seminar was attended by 302 participants from Japan, the Philippines and Sri Lanka, reflecting the interest and commitment of the international community to this branch of Taekwondo. The main instructors were renowned masters with extensive backgrounds in Poomsae and the training of elite athletes. Among them were:
- – Professor Min Woo Jeon, director of the Poomsae team at Kyung Hee University in South Korea, who has led the South Korean national team on several occasions and is considered one of the top references in Poomsae teaching and training.
- – Master Min Ki Noh, another influential instructor of the seminar, with a solid trajectory in the preparation of athletes.
- – Master Jae Jun Jeon, who has also coached the South Korean national team on multiple occasions, contributing his vast experience in high performance competition.
- – Yoo Joo Lee, Wan Jin Kang, and Yea Eun Cha, instructors who have made significant contributions to the development of Poomsae in their respective fields.

Professor Min Woo Jeon stated: «In this education, we taught the Poomsae, freestyle Poomsae, and training methods for Poomsae athletes with excellent Korean instructors. I would like to thank the Japan Taekwondo Association for their efforts in making the seminar successful. I would also like to express my gratitude to the Sri Lankan and Philippine teams who participated from far away.»
The seminar content was divided into two main areas: recognized Poomsae and Freestyle Poomsae. Instructors shared innovative techniques and training methods adapted to international competitions, as well as strategies to improve the execution of forms in both traditional and creative categories.
The event not only sought to train the coaches and practitioners present, but also to advance the inclusion of Poomsae in the Olympic Games, which would mark a milestone for this modality. With its growing popularity, Poomsae is emerging as a key discipline within the Taekwondo family, promoting diversity, creativity and inclusion in world sport competition.
This seminar marks a big step towards the global expansion of Poomsae, consolidating its position as a vital component in the evolution of modern Taekwondo and its visibility on Olympic and Olympic cycle stages.
President of ATU Prof. Kyu Seok LEE also said, “Poomsae in Taekwondo is a practice designed to prepare for real-life combat scenarios, focusing on defending against and countering an opponent’s attacks. It emphasizes the balance between offense and defense while also pursuing the beauty of movement. I hope that this education serves as a great opportunity for further enhancing your creativity”
