To raise quality standards in international Taekwondo competitions, the World Taekwondo Federation (WT) has launched a certification course for Poomsae coaches. This program, designed to improve the preparation and professionalization of coaches, has a cost of 300 US dollars and will be conducted virtually, which facilitates access to coaches from all over the world.

Despite the importance of this certification, the WT has announced that it will not be a mandatory requirement for the World Poomsae Championship, which will be held at the end of November 2024 in Hong Kong. According to information provided by the WT, the certification will be required as of January 1, 2025, for all coaches wishing to participate in events recognized and promoted by the federation.

This online certification course will cover essential topics for coaches, including:

  • The role and responsibility of the coach in the development of athletes.
  • Management of sporting events, from logistics to execution.
  • Competition rules in both recognized Poomsae and freestyle.
  • Prevention of competition manipulation, ensuring the integrity of the sport.
  • Medical and anti-doping care, with a focus on the health and well-being of the competitors.

The decision to postpone the mandatory certification until next year has been welcomed by many coaches, who see it as an opportunity to adapt to the new requirements without compromising their participation in the next world championships. However, the WT insists on the importance of coaches taking this course as soon as possible, stressing that those who become certified will be able to offer better preparation to their athletes, which could translate into better performance in competitions.

In summary, the WT’s initiative to certify Poomsae coaches is a significant step towards the professionalization of the sport, aligning coaching practices with international standards. Although it will not be mandatory for the next world championship, coaches looking to be at the forefront of their field and ensure their participation in future events should consider enrolling in this course as soon as possible.
