Peru scored one of the most important hosting decisions now on World Taekwondo’s calendar. WT officially selected Lima as the host city for the 2028 World Taekwondo Junior Championships, giving South America a major event with direct impact on the sport’s next generation.

The decision was made on April 10, 2026, during the World Taekwondo Council meeting in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, where WT confirmed Lima as the future home of its flagship junior world event. In the same session, the governing body also awarded the 2027 Grand Prix Challenge 1 to Pune, India, and Grand Prix Challenge 2 to Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

For Peru, this is more than a routine hosting announcement. The World Taekwondo Junior Championships sit at the center of the sport’s long-term pipeline, often serving as the stage where future Olympic contenders, senior world medalists, and Grand Prix-level athletes first establish themselves on the international scene. Lima’s selection signals that World Taekwondo sees Peru as a credible organizer for one of its most important development events.

The scale of the assignment is already clear. WT said the 2026 Junior World Championships in Tashkent brought together 986 athletes and 556 officials from 115 member national associations, plus the Refugee Team and Individual Neutral Athletes, making it the largest Junior Worlds on record by entries. That gives a concrete sense of the operational and political weight behind the event Lima is now preparing to host in 2028.

The decision also carries regional significance. At a time when Pan American Taekwondo continues pushing for stronger visibility and larger roles inside the global structure, Lima’s appointment gives both Peru and South America a major place on the road ahead.

This is not just about staging another tournament. It is about bringing one of World Taekwondo’s most important proving grounds to Peru — a world championship where the sport’s future starts to take shape.
