Seoul — World Taekwondo (WT) closed the international call for applications to join its permanent committees for the 2025–2027 cycle on Sunday, January 11, 2026 (11:59 p.m. Korean time), a process that usually anticipates which profiles and regions will have more influence in the areas where rules, integrity, development, and strategic priorities for world taekwondo are discussed.

As of January 18, 2026, the call is now in the evaluation and selection phase. The official announcement has not yet published a list of appointees, so the next expected move is the formal announcement of the appointments.

Committees: technical power that ends up shaping politics

Although committees function as support structures, in practice they often operate as centers of influence: from there, criteria are pushed, positions are held, and priorities are set, which are then translated into decisions that are visible to athletes, coaches, referees, MNAs, and organizers.

WT framed the call for applications as an opportunity to bring in experienced profiles and strengthen representation, including a specific pathway for international athletes (active or retired within the last 10 years).

What profiles did WT seek and what areas were left open?

WT targeted applicants with professional experience in a wide range of fields, including governance, law, finance, medicine/anti-doping, safeguarding, Para Taekwondo and classification, sustainability, digital innovation, education, development, and institutional relations.

At the same time, WT made it clear that it sought diversity and also encouraged applications from underrepresented regions or groups, in line with a narrative of greater institutional balance.

Eligibility, ethics, and integrity filter

The official announcement allowed current members to apply to continue in their roles, but set a clear eligibility framework: it required ethical standards and excluded individuals under sanction or who did not meet the integrity requirements set out in the organization’s regulations.

Actual term of office

WT defined the term of office as running from the date of acceptance until the close of the 2027 WT World Championships, giving this cycle direct scope over a key section of the competitive and governance calendar.

What to expect now

With the application window now closed, the focus has shifted to who made the cut and what balance WT has achieved: athlete presence, continental distribution, technical vs. institutional profiles, and consistency with the athlete-centered management narrative. The announcement of appointments will be the concrete signal.
