Taekwondo has reached a new level of recognition in the United States. Thanks to an initiative by state legislator Cindy Ryu, the state of Washington approved a tax exemption for Taekwondo lessons, officially recognizing the discipline in state law as an educational, cultural, and sports activity.

A community-driven initiative

The measure, introduced by Ryu at the request of families and Taekwondo schools, positions the martial art at the heart of Washington’s public policies on education and culture. “I didn’t do it for recognition, but because the community asked for it,” the lawmaker explained when presenting the benefit.

Taekwondo on the political agenda

Cindy Ryu, a Korean American trailblazer in U.S. politics, has brought several initiatives to the Washington legislature that highlight Korean culture. Among them are the creation of Kimchi Day in Washington and now the formal recognition of Taekwondo as part of the state’s educational and cultural heritage.

This decision represents an important precedent for Taekwondo in the Americas: for the first time, the practice has been legally recognized as an activity that promotes values, supports youth development, and contributes to social integration.

A global impact

The step taken in Washington reflects how Taekwondo continues to expand its influence beyond dojangs and international competitions. Today, in addition to being an Olympic sport, it is acknowledged in law as a tool for education, culture, and community development.

This advancement confirms that Taekwondo is not only part of the sporting present but also a cultural bridge with global projection.
