Canada Delivers Historic Performance at the 2025 FISU World University Games

Historic Gold for Nithan Brindamohan
The standout performance came from Nithan Brindamohan, who captured the gold medal in the men’s -54 kg division. This marks Canada’s first-ever gold medal at a FISU Games and its first kyorugi medal since Ivett Gonda in 2011.
Brindamohan stormed through four consecutive matches, all decided by 2-1 scores, finishing his historic run with a gold medal victory over Youngsuk Ethan Gun of the United States.
Bronze in Men’s Team Poomsae
Canada’s first medal came from the men’s team poomsae event, where Ethan So (Richmond Hill, Ont. / McMaster), Gordon Cheuk (Richmond, B.C. / Simon Fraser) and Kai-Hsin Chang (Toronto / Western) delivered an impressive performance to claim bronze. They tied the United States with a score of 8.833 and secured the medal on the freestyle score tiebreaker.
The women’s team — Emma Chau (Markham, Ont. / Toronto), Valerie Ho (Red Deer, Alta. / Calgary) and Evelyn Wu (North York, Ont. / Toronto) — narrowly missed the podium, finishing fifth with a score of 8.316, just behind Germany’s 8.366.
Leonarda Andric Adds Bronze in -67 kg
Leonarda Andric (Ottawa, Ont. / Ottawa), Canada’s two-time senior national champion (2024 and 2025), secured bronze in the women’s -67 kg category. She defeated Giulia Maggiore (Italy) and Nuray Khussainova (Kazakhstan), both by 2-0 scores, before falling in the semifinals to Jiana Xing (China).
Andric, a recent University of Ottawa graduate, has moved up a weight class as part of her preparation for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic cycle.
A Milestone for Taekwondo Canada
Allan Wrigley, Taekwondo Canada’s High Performance Director, celebrated the team’s achievements:
