Italy claimed three medals at the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF 2025), but the President of the Italian Taekwondo Federation (FITA), Angelo Cito, did not hold back his frustration over the conditions under which the event was held.

Cito praised the Italian athletes for their performance, calling the team “protagonists,” but at the same time issued a strong criticism of the organization:
“This time, our athletes deserve even greater admiration, not only for the results but for the spirit of sacrifice they showed in a scenario I never imagined I would find. They were extraordinary, especially competing in organizational conditions that were, to say the least, embarrassing. It is inexplicable that something like this can be allowed today!” said the FITA President.
What is EYOF 2025?
The European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) is a biennial multi-sport event organized by the European Olympic Committees, bringing together the best youth athletes from across the continent to give them an early Olympic experience.
The 2025 edition was held from July 20 to 26, 2025, in Skopje, North Macedonia, featuring 3,500 athletes from 48 countries competing in 11 sports, including Taekwondo. The EYOF is regarded as a breeding ground for future Olympic champions and a platform to promote the Olympic values of friendship, excellence, and respect.
Poor Facilities and Hygiene Issues
Cito was explicit when describing what the athletes faced:
“Run-down facilities, interrupted competitions, and sanitary conditions at the limit of what is acceptable. One example: with temperatures near 50 degrees Celsius, there was a power outage and it was impossible to restore the air conditioning. Believe me, I never thought I would experience something like this in 2025. For our athletes, competing in such conditions meant going beyond their limits.”
He also emphasized that this problem affected all participants, not only the Italian team:
“My respect goes to all the athletes who showed professionalism and dedication under such adverse circumstances. I hope those responsible do their job in the future, ensuring these situations are not repeated.”
Italy Shines Despite Adversity
Despite the challenges, the Italian Taekwondo team secured three medals, confirming their potential and preparation at the youth level. Cito highlighted the commitment of his athletes and coaches, noting that “the effort and attitude shown in such extreme conditions are worth more than any sporting result.”
