Getting ready for a premier event of 2024, we had an exclusive interview with Taekwondo Canada CEO David Harris, who told us about all the features the athletes, coaches, referees, and officials will find at this important G-2 ranked event.
From February 8 to 10, the city of Vancouver, British Columbia will host the first event in the Pan American region that will award 20 important ranking points in the race to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
We talked in exclusive with David Harris, Taekwondo Canada CEO, and this is what he said to us.
Why is it important to compete at the Canada Open in 2024
This is the first competition of the season within PATU and is a G2 event. The world-class city of Vancouver, British Columbia will be the host for the event that will award 20 ranking points towards the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Why do you think that WT granted G2 status to the event?
In receiving a G2 status for the event, both PATU and World Taekwondo have recognized the quality of this yearly event in Canada. From an operational perspective, the Canada Open features a world-class city in Vancouver as well as a five star host hotel and competition venue in the Vancouver Convention Centre. Last year, the Canada Open was recognized as one of the best events on the calendar by athletes, coaches and officials alike. We are committed to providing the best possible experience for all who attend our event.
What can the people expect by going to the Canada Open in terms of organization?
Those attending the 2024 Canada Open, whether they be athletes, coaches, officials or spectators can expect a world-class event utilizing the best resources that the city has to offer. From competition venue to host hotel, the 2024 Canada Open is not only the first on the calendar but guaranteed to be one of the top events within PATU and the WT in 2024.
How is the OC getting ready for the event?
The Taekwondo Canada Organizing Committee is currently working with Sport Canada, the Province of British Columbia and the City of Vancouver in preparation for the 2024 Canada Open. All of our premiere partners have pulled together to ensure a first-class event for those attending in February. Our Taekwondo Canada team is working diligently with our governing bodies as well to ensure that the event meets the world-class standards set by both PATU and WT.
Why Vancouver?
The partnerships formed with the Government of Canada, Province of British Columbia and City of Vancouver have provided a partnership group that is second to none in terms of preparations and assistance in ensuring that the 2024 Canada Open is one of the best events in the world.
The City of Vancouver also possesses a world-class quality of life with many things for all to see and do while visiting the city. From fine dining to nature trails, Vancouver is one of the top cities in the world.
How important is the relationship with PATU and WT to getting the G2 sanction?
Quite frankly, we could not hold a world-class event such as the 2024 Canada Open without the guidance and assistance of both PATU and World Taekwondo. The strong, positive relationships that we have with both important governing bodies and their leadership only makes our ability to run a world-class event like the Canada Open that much easier.
